Metallic Taste in Well Water: Causes and the Fix

A metallic taste is your water carrying metal, and the useful question is whose metal: the aquifer's, your own pipes', or metal concentrated by things growing in the well. One inexpensive test panel splits those three.

Three sources of the taste

The aquifer's metal is dissolved iron and manganese, the same minerals behind rust stains and black slime. Your pipes' metal shows up when the water's pH runs low: acidic water etches copper and galvanized plumbing, and the classic tells are blue-green stains under drips and a taste that is strongest from the hot tap after the water sat overnight. The living source is bacterial: iron and manganese bacteria concentrate metals in their slime and shed them back, so the taste rides along with stains and gunk.
