Where can I get my well water tested?
Start with your county health department, which often tests private wells for coliform and nitrate at low cost, then your state's list of certified drinking water laboratories, then the county extension office, which runs well testing clinics in many states. Ask for total coliform and E. coli plus nitrate at minimum, and follow the lab's sampling instructions exactly.
Home kits are screening tools: strips for hardness, pH, iron, and nitrate, and a presence-absence bottle for coliform. For a result with consequences, a home sale, a lender, an infant in the house, use the certified lab.
Keep every result. A well with a history is a well you can reason about, and a failed coliform test is usually a weekend of sealing the wellhead, shocking the system, and retesting.
